Technician and Classroom Support (Technology Faculty)

The successful applicant for this role will become part of a team of nine in a vibrant, passionate department. The Technology department prides itself on working with learners to meet their goals and develop a wide range of skills and interests whilst progressing towards the achievement of qualifications. 


Our Technician and Classroom Support will be required to prepare materials and equipment for practical lessons, to maintain machinery and equipment in accordance with Health & Safety requirements and to maintain and monitor consumables (materials) and equipment within the department. 


We are looking for someone diligent, hardworking, who enjoys working in a team, someone who is organised, adaptable and willing to learn. We would also require the candidate to support the curriculum and department, assisting and working with students across the department either within the classroom, in small groups or one-to-one.


Experience in the following is preferred, but training is available for the candidate with the right personal skills: 


  • Relevant practical experience of working within a workshop or similar environment 

  • Confidence in using a range of machinery for both metal and woodworking. 

  • Knowledge of Health & Safety within a workshop environment and completing risk assessments. 

  • The skills to maintain and repair workshop tools and equipment. 



The Technology department is a forward thinking and adaptable department where we learn from each other to develop our practice. 



Under the supervision and control of the Heads of Department, to provide assistance as required in the preparation of resources for practical lessons that meet both the health and safety standards and requirements of the classes involved

To support the curriculum and department, assisting and working with students across the department either within the classroom, in small groups or one-to-one.

38 working weeks per annum (term time only)

Disclosure level:



Strategic Planning:

  • To assist in the organisation and storage of materials, equipment and resources.  To issue and receive back resources, check for missing and damaged equipment against inventories and inform the technician/senior technician and relevant members of the teaching staff.

  • To undertake stock checks of materials and equipment in accordance with the established system and report stock levels to the technician/senior technician.

  • To assist in the maintenance of equipment and resources to ensure good safe working order of all resources, including routine testing and checks, assistance in servicing and undertaking minor repairs (as trained) as directed by the technician/senior technician.

  • To be familiar with and advise staff and pupils on particular hazards of chemicals, materials and equipment in line with COSHH, CLEAPPS and other relevant health and safety guidelines.  To remain aware of current safety guidelines and legislation.

  • To work to the established organisational practices of the department so as to ensure the efficient organisation of work and storage areas, ensuring that all working areas are left in a safe and secure state at all times.


Curriculum Provision:

  • To assist in the preparation of materials, equipment, experiments and teaching aids for classroom use under the direct supervision of the technician/senior technician.

  • To tidy up and clean workshops/laboratories or other relevant working areas, materials and equipment, including breakages, spillages and disposing of waste materials so as to ensure a safe and hygienic working environment at all times.

  • To construct and assemble apparatus in preparation for lessons, as directed by the technician/senior technician or teaching staff.

  • To assist in checking deliveries of resources and equipment, ensuring all resources are checked and stored safely and securely.

  • To take the relevant materials and equipment to classrooms as required in accordance with the planned learning activities.  To ensure all such materials and equipment are returned in good condition and stored safely and securely.

  • To assist the teacher in:

  • Clarifying and explaining instructions

  • Ensuring the student is able to use the equipment and materials provided

  • Motivating and encouraging the student as required

  • To assist individuals and groups of students in developing knowledge, skills and attitudes as defined by the curriculum.  To take into account the learning support involved to aid students to learn as effectively as possible.

  • To assist in preparing, using and maintaining relevant teaching resources, including wall displays and cleaning up classrooms after activities.


Pastoral Provision

  • To establish supportive relationships with students and to encourage acceptance and inclusion of all students

  • To encourage social integration and individual development of students.  To develop methods of promoting and reinforcing students’ self-esteem.

  • To supervise an individual or small group of students within a class under the overall control of the teacher

  • To remain aware, and work within, all relevant school working practices, policies and procedures.


Staff Development:


Deployment of Staff:

  • To take part in the Schools’s staff development programme by participating in arrangements for further training and professional development.

  • To take responsibility for continuing personal development in the relevant areas including subject knowledge and teaching methods.

  • To engage actively in the Performance Management Review process.

  • To ensure the effective/efficient deployment of classroom support.

  • To work as a member of a designated team and to contribute positively to effective working relations within the School.


Quality Assurance:

  • To help implement School quality procedures and to adhere to those.

  • To contribute to the process of monitoring and evaluation of the Curriculum Area/Department in line with agreed College procedures, including evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria.

  • To seek/implement modification and improvement where required.

  • To take part as may be required, in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the College.


Management Information:

  • To maintain appropriate records and to provide relevant accurate and up-to-date information for SIMs, registers, etc.

  • To complete the relevant documentation to assist in the tracking of students.

  • To track student progress and use information to inform teaching and learning.



  • To communicate effectively with the parents of students as appropriate.

  • Where appropriate, to communicate and co-operate with persons or bodies outside the College.

  • To follow agreed policies for communications in the College.


Marketing and Liaison:

  • To take part in marketing and liaison activities such as Open Evenings, Parents’ Information Evenings and liaison events with partner schools.

  • To contribute to the development of effective subject links with external agencies.


Management of Resources:

  • To contribute to the process of ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.

  • To assist the Head of Learning to identify resource needs and to contribute to the efficient/effective use of physical resources.

  • To co-operate with other staff to ensure a sharing and effective use of resources to the benefit of the College, Department and students.

Other Specific Duties 

  • To play a full part in the life of the College community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.
  • To support the College in meeting its legal requirements for Worship.
  • To actively promote the College’s corporate policies.
  • To continue personal development as agreed.
  • To comply with the College’s Health and Safety Policy and undertake Risk Assessments as appropriate.
  • To undertake any other duty as specified by the Principal or Head of Department not mentioned in the above.

Relevant Experience

Practical experience within a Technology workshop environment

Previous experience of working with children within a classroom environment or similar

Practical experience of providing technical support in science, design or technology lessons.
