As the Exclusive Recruitment partner of the Cornwall Association of Primary Heads, Opus are currently working exclusively with a large multi academy trust to appoint a Head of Psychological Wellbeing in Camborne on a permanent basis.

The Head of Psychological Wellbeing will be expected to drive the strategic direction of Psychological Wellbeing and develop an evidence base of best practice in order to develop and share best practise through publishing works and engaging in conference speaking and to champion a 'compassion' approach. They will create and maintain a psychological, physical and social definition of wellbeing and coordinate services around this holistic people-centred approach as well as lead a comprehensive, strategic and evidenced-based provision for both staff and pupil well-being.


Develop policy and long term strategy for staff and pupil advice and wellbeing comprising of Counselling, Mental Health, Welfare, and Funding, to ensure the highest standard of support for staff and pupils, ensuring their changing needs are met.

To set service standards, review and evaluate their own delivery to ensure that they best meet the Trust’s needs.

Benchmark with other MAT’s. and develop new services or methods of delivery to enhance wellbeing, mental health and welfare of staff and pupils

Delivery of professional advisory role to the Trust in relation to the areas of employee advice and wellbeing, including keeping abreast of all relevant legislation and best practice

To ensure all staff have a working knowledge of legislation and regulations pertaining to pupils including health and welfare, drug misuse, equality, disability, student funding and safeguarding children.

Provide advice on specific crisis situations, including how best to manage risk to the employees concerned and the wider Trust in line with guidance and best practices to create a culture of continuous improvement and innovation and meet the Trust strategic objectives.

Review all serious cases and make recommendations on lessons to be learned in order to support the Human Resources Function in dealing employee related matters concerning the Health, wellbeing and welfare of Staff in relation to sickness.

Support staff across the Trust who are dealing with students with particularly complex cases, and where appropriate to provide advice and guidance directly to these students.

Work in partnership with the executive team and external stakeholders to develop policies and strategies to create a more holistic and enhanced employee experience supported health wellbeing and employee engagement

Main duties and responsibilities

· Staff facing supervision and case management organisation

 · Compassion fatigue training & sessions and supporting of all staff

· Coordinate external zero-contract counselling, therapy & workshops recruitment and planning for pupils

· Overseeing group sessions and supervising internal & external pupil-facing providers

· Lead on planned and in-house consulting to teachers/teams re pupil-related issues & dynamics

 · With their team, provide a range of support & counselling to enhance the work/school experience within the trust and optimise social and academic inclusion.

· Provide short term counselling to pupils and staff

· Provide mental health support to pupils.

· Deliver a short term counselling service of up to 6 sessions

· Provide general well-being advice based in academies

· Provide mental health support service for pupils and a mental health consultancy service for staff. · Liaise as appropriate with agencies to ensure that ongoing mental health mentoring support for pupils with diagnosable mental health conditions is effective and appropriate.

 · ability to successfully implement and lead on projects, providing support and supervision for staff and ensuring targets are met. Working with colleagues and other relevant professionals

· ability to use a range of approaches to build relationships and networks and to communicate effectively. High sense of personal integrity.

 · Establishing constructive relationships and communicating with other agencies & professionals Trust-wide organisation, strategy and development

· Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the Trust’s Five Year Plan, policies, practices and procedures, so as to support the Trust’s values and vision

The postholder may be required to perform other duties appropriate to the level of the role, as directed by the Principal, SLT or line manager.


Experience required:

· Experience of using a wide range of office equipment and ICT software, information systems in an administrative environment

· Experience within an education setting Education & Training

• Membership of a recognized professional counselling body, such as BACP or NCS.

• A minimum of 400 hours practical counselling in a generic counselling role.

· Diploma in Person Centred Counselling/IAPT Qualification or equivalent qualification

· Detailed understanding of the inter relationship between psychological, physical and social wellbeing of staff

· Track record of delivering services which support organisational and individual improvements in wellbeing

· High level of interpersonal skills in order to develop and maintain effective working relationships at all levels and to demonstrate tact and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues.

· Detailed understanding of approaches to equality and diversity in employment and how this applies to the area of wellbeing.

· Knowledge of the local voluntary sector and local service provision across the South West

 · Knowledge of various counselling approaches, including group therapies and one to one counselling methods

· Knowledge of Safeguarding Children policies and procedures · · Knowledge of local health and social care services and referral pathways

 · Experience of working with/understanding mental health issues including anxiety and depression.

· Experience working in health and social care, psychological therapies, or third sector.


This is a full time permanent position offering a starting salary of £56,755 plus other benefits.
